"Spouse"

It is not very often that I rant and rave about the books I read, considering that I am very very selective in my reading- unless the book had vibes of having a positive ending, I NEVER pick it up in the first place...

But, then- I borrowed this book "Spouse" by Shobha De yesterday from a friend- and I can't help writing about it here in my personal writing space...

To begin with I have to declare, I had this very very negative image about Shobha De in my before I read this book. I was under the prejudice that her writing was vulgar and very descriptive and have even wondered how a female author could write this way... I have to admit to selectively reading bits and pieces of one of her more "descriptive" books during my adolescence- the descriptive parts-yes.. so I guess I missed out on the actual essence of her writing and therefore this prejudice perhaps...

"Spouse" seems to put into perspective every single aspect of everyday life that makes or breaks a marriage. Surprisingly for me, Shobha's advice is so grounded and conservative- not even a shade of rebellion or revolt- just plain common sense on when to "Zip it" and when to assert oneself- be it the ebony or the ivory clan..

Her empathy towards broken marriages, the way she dissects the reasons and presents the outcomes, suggests ways to make such tumultuous times more bearable are simply fantastic...She calls a spade a spade and very clearly states when it is indeed time to "move on".

Very clearly her message is "Although marriage is such a dubious institution it could still work out in these modern times, provided both partners are willing to invest in it purely for the love, trust and emotional security it offers... And once you know it has gone past the point of  irrevocable damage, don't stick around like a sore thumb- move on- Get a life!!!"
